Gresmalt Innovability

To promote innovation and technology transfer, Gresmalt has established partnerships with several universities, including the Free University of Bolzano, the University of Calabria, the University of Brescia, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the University of Palermo, the University of Pavia, the University of Sassari and the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid.

These collaborations translate into research and development projects that promote the exchange of knowledge and technology transfer.

All projects have the common goal of implementing sustainability principles in business operating models, using digital technologies and the Industry 5.0 paradigm.

Local raw materials for more sustainable ceramics

Industrial Research and Experimental Development Project dedicated to the enhancement of local resources in the Emilia-Romagna region and industrial waste from the ceramics industry. The aim was to develop new formulations for mixtures and glazes, reducing dependence on imported raw materials. The results demonstrated that sustainability and quality can coexist, opening up concrete prospects for industrialisation.

Sustainable ceramic production with real-time assessment

Project co-funded by the European LIFE Programme for the development of a dynamic Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment model integrated into company management systems. This innovative approach allows for real-time analysis and prediction of the environmental, economic and social impact of ceramic production. The model has contributed to the refinement of G3NIUS technology, recognised by the European Commission as the industry benchmark.

The digital and adaptive ceramics factory

Industrial Research and Experimental Development Project for the creation of a smart ceramics factory, capable of transforming the variability of raw materials from a problem into a manageable resource. Using IoT technologies and Business Intelligence tools, a decision-making system has been developed that integrates technological, economic and environmental data in real time. This approach has made it possible to optimise production cycles, reducing emissions and environmental impact.

Intelligent management of the ceramic supply chain

Industrial Research and Experimental Development Project for the development of a hybrid supply chain management model, combining push and pull logic to balance operational efficiency and strategic flexibility. Through IoT technologies and predictive algorithms, the project has made the supply chain more resilient to market fluctuations and geopolitical uncertainties. The goal was to optimise inventory management by reducing procurement risks.

Internet of Enterprise for sustainable manufacturing

Industrial Research and Experimental Development Project for the development of an ‘Internet of Enterprise’ model that connects the chemical industry of inks and enamels with ceramic production through IoT technologies and supply chain digitalisation. The project has developed eco-designed formulations with reduced environmental impact, a dynamic Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment system integrated with company management systems, and a Multi-ERP platform for real-time data exchange along the supply chain.

Circular economy in the ceramic supply chain

Industrial Research and Experimental Development Project for the design and validation of a Circular Enterprise 4.0 model, integrating circular economy and digital transformation of production plants. The project involved the entire ceramic supply chain, developing new formulations for mixtures, engobes and glazes from natural and recycled materials. The aim was to reduce dependence on virgin raw materials without compromising product quality.

From the Smart Factory to the Intelligent Factory

Industrial Research and Experimental Development Project to transform the smart factory into a factory capable of learning and adapting. Through machine learning models and an edge-to-cloud architecture, the project develops systems for real-time monitoring of the entire ceramic supply chain. A distinctive feature is the creation of a residential prototype with a ventilated ceramic envelope to validate performance in real-world conditions.

Circularity and digitalisation of the supply chain

Industrial Research and Experimental Development Project for the transformation of the ceramics supply chain through digital technologies, circular economy and new generation materials. The central element is the development of a Digital Supply Chain Twin to simulate scenarios, predict risks and optimise procurement decisions. The project includes the mapping of Italian and European georesources and the development of new sustainable chemical additives.

Strategic raw materials and advanced recycling

Industrial Research and Experimental Development Project to reduce the ceramics sector’s dependence on critical and strategic raw materials. The project develops advanced technologies for the recovery, recycling and valorisation of Recycled Raw Materials, integrating them into production processes in a controlled and traceable manner. The approach is based on innovative purification processes, eco-design using artificial intelligence and digital passports for traceability.

Sustainability as a key factor of innovation
